Franz Josef Sima has spent his life around plants. Born in Villach, Austria in 1989 and raised in a traditional family nursery operating since 1889, he began working in the business as a child and had his first contact with cannabis at the age of 13. More than two decades later, he is recognized across Europe, the Middle East and Africa as a trusted authority on commercial and pharmaceutical cannabis cultivation.
Before joining Fluence, Franz built and refined cultivation operations from the ground up. As Agronomist at NYSK Holdings / Pharmacann International in North Macedonia he designed a state-of-the-art 6,000 m² facility and lifted yields by 50% while increasing cannabinoid content. He led the first cultivation compliant cultivation cycle at MG Health in Lesotho- the first EU-GMP-certified cannabis production in Africa- and directed the debut grow at Chroni-Co in South Africa, finishing the first harvest with THC levels from 22–30%. He also founded Happy Plant, a Villach-based clone nursery that opened the European market to Californian genetics in 2016. As 4th generation farmer, Franz revived his parents nursery and created awareness for American cultivars in Europe, importing cultivars like Girl Scout Cookies and Tahoe OG.
Since 2022, at Fluence by Signify, Franz has supported customers across Israel, Portugal, South Africa, Germany, Denmark and the UK — building repeatable, “copy-paste” cultivation procedures, developing Best-of-Brand and Best-of-Practice methodology for pharmaceutical cultivation, and advancing light strategies such as under- and inter-canopy lighting and Fluence’s research-based “Red Sandwich” approach. Having visited more than 50 cultivation sites across EMEA, he is a frequently requested voice on standardizing quality and accelerating ROI.
Franz is also an active educator and speaker. He hosted the Fluence invite-only Propagation Masterclass at Flowery Field Vienna, bringing leading cultivators together, sits on panels at ICBC Berlin and Cannabis Europa, and contributes expert commentary to Prohibition Partners’ European Cannabis Report and trade outlets including Krautinvest. As a long-time medical cannabis patient himself, he brings an unusually complete perspective — from clone to compliant, pharmaceutical-grade product.
